During the month of Ramadan, Muslims must abstain from consuming any food or drink while carrying on with their day to day tasks. This means that many observing the month will be at work, school or running errands while fasting.
Ramadan is also a time of spiritual reflection where worshippers are encouraged to make a greater effort to get closer to God and stronger in their faith. Due to this, there has been some confusion over the years about which activities are appropriate during the holy month.
One of those is the act of watching TV or movies on streaming apps like Netflix during Ramadan.

In the age of binge watching, you may think that sitting down for multiple hours on end to go through your favourite show could be the perfect way to kill time before you are able to eat again. But what is the guidance on watching movies during Ramadan?
Is it haram to watch Netflix during Ramadan?
In Islam a person is forbidden from looking at things that depict nudity, violence and immoral actions or listening to things that have obscene language and themes. The general guidance is that if movies are free of these things then they you are allowed to watch it but if they feature in the film then it is haram.
During Ramadan this is even more greatly discouraged. The holy month is supposed to be a time for self reflection and devotion to God.
Watching movies or listening to music during Ramadan is frowned upon as you are supposed to spend that time more constructively by reading or listening to the Qu'ran or consuming content that will help you improve your life or is related to Islam. The rule of thumb for Ramadan is prioritise the Qu'ran and Islamic scriptures and if you are to watch something outside of that like the news, a tv show or documentary for instance then make sure it's beneficial and not hedonistic.
